Pick of the Litter: fruit Edition

Oranges
Heavy for size, with smooth and thin skin that is firm yielding only to pressure. Should be a deep orange color. Avoid sunken or withered oranges with thick skin. Store in Refrigerator once cut or peeled.

Apples
Rich, deep and uniform in color. Avoid bruised, soft or blemished apples. Store covered in refrigerator and once cut be sure to sprinkle with lemon juice to keep apples from browning!

Bananas
Firm, uniform in color, mostly yellow and some green. Avoid bananas that is soft, bruised, spotted or brown. If the banana is green it will need time to ripen. Store banana at room temperature with stem in water.

Grapefruit
Heavy for size with smooth and thin skin. Avoid grapefruit that is puffy skinned, or has sunken withered or soft areas. Store in refrigerator if cut open cover in a bag.

Pineapple
Smell the bottom of the pineapple and push the “bulging eye” if it’s a little soft and smells sweet it’s ready to go home. Avoid pineapples that have a mostly greenish look, or have a slight fermented odor. Store at room temperature but when cut store in the refrigerator.

Watermelon
Round with smooth surface and a creamy dot on underside. Avoid those with shiny surface or creamy surface on more than half the melon. Knock on the melon and if it vibrates with a hollow sound it's ready to go home! Store it in the refrigerator once cut in a tightly closed container!

Grapes
Plump, deep, uniform color, tight clusters on dark green stems. Avoid grapes that are brown soft and or discolored. Store grapes in the refrigerator and keep them on the stem until eating them for longest freshness.

Peaches
Firm, deep color with rosy blush. Avoid those that are soft, brown, green or bruised in certain areas. Store peaches in refrigerator.

Berries
Medium in size, firm in touch, solid and plump. Be sure to look carefully at all the berries for mold or juicing. Store unwashed and spread out in the container and check regularly for mold before eating.

Lemons
Heavy for size, deep yellow with uniform color and smooth thin skin. Avoid green tinges or thick skin. Put lemon in hot water before juicing to get more juice! Store in refrigerator.

pomegranates
round, full, firm and consistent in color. Avoid those with dents and bruises. Store at room temperature and then when cut store in refrigerator.

Cantaloupe
Webbed skin with yellowish color on the underside. Check the stem if it yields to slight pressure and contains a fragrant aroma it’s ready to go home! Avoid fruit that is sunken. Once cut keep in a container in refrigerator.
